SAE SAE HOSTEL - OUR FAVORITE PLACE IN YOGYAKARTA
Yogyakarta, otherwise known as Jogja.
Prior to arriving, we didn't know much about this city, only that we wanted to be centrally located to have easy access to all of it’s attractions.
We stumbled upon Sae Sae Hostel on Air BnB while looking for a place to stay in Jogja, located on the island of Java. Jogja is known for it’s vibrant arts scene, amazing food and it’s close proximity to famous historical landmarks such as Borobudur and Prambanan temples.
About a 30 minute taxi ride from the airport, Sae Sae is located here in the main hub of Jogja off a small side street. Sae Sae is run by a Belgian/Indonesian couple, Michelle and Boy. It’s well designed and curated with unique works of art from the local community. A friendly, comfortable environment, you will immediately feel at home here.
ACCOMMODATION
Traveling as a couple, we opted for a private double bed room, which comes furnished with a small desk and stool, mirror, oscillating fan, window and a double barn door which opens to a common hall. They also have a few dorm rooms equipped with bunk beds and air con for solo travelers.
In the common area is a large community table made from a reclaimed barn door, a wrap-around bench with large comfortable pillows, chairs and beanbags which provide ample room to relax or work. The room felt as though it was built to usher in positive energy and conversation between guests. An area where vinyls are played, ideas are shared and routes are planned, together.
THE VIBE
By far the best thing about Sae Sae is the people who work there. Boy and his staff were some of the most welcoming and helpful people we've met on our trip. They really went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed their city providing us tips on how to navigate around, where to find the best local eats and when to visit the temples and art exhibits. This saved us a lot of time and effort.
We made a number of friends while staying at Sae Sae and we continued to travel with them through Indonesia. It's bound to happen to you so make sure you book early and stay a few nights - or weeks. It's the best place to call home while exploring Jogja.
